The opening for the exhibition “The Ascension of the Prophet and the Stages of His Journey (the Ascension in Ottoman Culture)” will be held on the evening of Friday, 12 May 2017, at the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Sultanahmet, Istanbul.
Under the direction of Ayşe Taşkent and Nicole N. Kançal Ferrari, the exhibition brings together choice examples of Islamic visual culture produced from the 15th to the 18th century. The exhibition features some 70 miniatures depicting the tale of the Prophet’s ascension and the sacred cities of Islam, offered to viewers in the form of high-quality facsimiles gathered from museums and art collections across the world.
The project of which the exhibition is part will also hold a panel discussion on the Ascension and the Sacred Cities of Islam, as well as a recital of the forgotten tradition of ascension poetry. An edited volume on the ascension will also be published as part of the project.
The exhibition, supported by the Bağımsız Sanat Vakfı, will be open between the hours of 10:00 and 18:00 from 13 May to 30 June 2017 at the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum.
