(Let Me Call) My Lord On Thee

This song, sung by Nader Khan, is the English translation of a poem written by Yunus Emre (1240-1320), one of the most famous Sufi poets who has made a great impact on the Turkish-Muslim culture.

This poem is at essence an entreaty to God, by means of the intercession of those things and people that are deemed to be close to God Almighty, such as the rocks and the mountains,  and the Prophets of God.

Muhtar Holland's translation demonstrates mastery of the English language, managing to maintain the rhyme and meter of the Turkish original.

(Let Me Call) My Lord On Thee

Muhtar Holland

With the rocks and mountains high, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee.
At the dawn with birds that fly, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee.

With Isa, raised on high, With Musa on Sinai,
With the rod that he holds by, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee.

With thankful praise addressed to God With the Koran’s ‘Say: He is God’,
With bare feet, head uncovered, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee.

With Ayyub in suffering drear With Yaqub shedding many a tear
With Muhammad, loved so dear, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee.

With this song, Yunus regales, Singing with the nightingales,
With the Truth’s most loving slaves, Let me call, my Lord, on Thee

God's Messenger kissed Al-Hasan bin Ali (his grandchild) while Al-Aqra' bin Habis At-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them", God's Messenger cast a look at him and said, "Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully." (Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), 18)
